The fine print, in plain English

Privacy Policy.

Last updated · July 2026
The short version: we collect only what the planner needs to plan your dinners, we use it only for that, and we will never sell your information. Ever. What follows is the complete, formal account of that promise.
What we collect
  • Your account — email address, a password (stored only in securely hashed form), and an optional phone number if you choose to leave one for future text reminders.
  • Your household profile — what you tell the survey: household size, tastes, equipment, skill level, spice cabinet, and any allergies or dietary needs. Allergy information is used for exactly one thing: steering your suggestions and grocery lists around them, and proposing alternatives. Nothing else, ever.
  • Your cooking life here — the weeks you plan, the dinners you pick, your ratings, tap-tags, and any notes you add. Today these still live in your own browser rather than on our servers; the account features that will keep them for you are still being built. When that changes, this page changes first.
  • Guest planning — if you plan without an account, your picks and survey answers live in your own browser's local storage. They never reach our servers unless you sign up, at which point they become your account (that's the import working as promised).
  • Basic traffic statistics — none, today. We don't run any analytics software. Our host keeps the standard server logs every web host keeps, and that's all. If we ever add analytics, this page will name it and say what it counts, before it runs.
How we use it
  • To run the planner: suggest dinners for your table, build your grocery list, remember your week.
  • To send the weekly reminder you asked for — and only if you asked. Every email has a one-tap unsubscribe, and skipping a week never takes more than that one tap.
  • To make the recipes better for everyone: your ratings join anonymous, aggregate counts ("6 households said too salty") that improve the shared recipes. Your written notes are never published — they're classified by our software into those counts and kept with your own history.
  • To keep the site secure, working, and honest.
What we never do

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information — to anyone, for any reason. We don't build advertising profiles of you, and we don't share your household's details with data brokers, marketers, or "partners." This is the promise on our signup screen, and it's the promise here, in the formal document, in the same words.

Who helps us run the site

Like nearly every website, we rely on a small set of service providers to operate. Today that list is: Vercel (hosts the site and, like any web host, sees standard server logs), Supabase (stores the recipe database; for members, your account and the answers you've given us; and the search terms visitors type that find no recipe — just the words and a date, never who typed them, so we learn which dinners to add next), Resend (delivers our email — the weekly planning note, sign-in links, and account notices), and Google AdSense (serves the ads, described in the next section). They process data on our behalf, under contract, solely to provide those services to us. They are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes. If this list changes, this page changes with it.

Cookies & advertising

BetterDinnerPlans is free because it's supported by advertising, served through Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or others across the web — standard practice for ad-supported sites. If you'd rather not receive personalized ads, you can opt out anytime through Google Ads Settings, and you can read how Google's advertising products use cookies at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Your survey answers, allergies, plans, and ratings are not shared with advertisers. Ads are served alongside our content, not fed by your profile.

Children

BetterDinnerPlans is a tool for the adults who plan a household's dinners; it is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. You must be 13 or older to create an account. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we'll delete the account and its information. Parents: if you believe your child has created an account, write to us at contact@betterdinnerplans.net and we'll take care of it. Details you share about the kids at your table — ages, pickiness, appetites — are entered by you, belong to your household profile, and are used only to size portions and tune suggestions.

Your controls
  • Edit anything, anytime — every survey answer, preference, and rating stays editable forever. That's a product principle, not just a policy line.
  • Unsubscribe in one tap — from any email we send.
  • Close your account — and your personal information is deleted. Your past ratings survive only inside anonymous aggregate counts that can't be traced back to you.
  • Ask us anything — including for a copy or deletion of your data, whatever your state's law provides. Write to us via the Contact link below; we answer as a family business, which is to say: personally.
How long we keep things

As long as you have an account, we keep what makes it work — your profile, plans, and ratings. Close your account and your personal information is deleted; we keep only what the law requires us to keep, for only as long as it requires, plus the anonymous aggregate counts that can't be traced back to you.

One thing we delete without being asked: the private notes you leave on a dinner — the “kids picked out the mushrooms” kind — are erased twelve months after you write them. They were never published anywhere, and after a year they've done their job. Your stars and your tap-tags stay, because they're what the recipe's rating is made of.

Changes & contact

If this policy changes as the site evolves, we'll update this page and the date at the top — and if a change ever meaningfully affects your data, we'll say so plainly rather than bury it. Questions? Use the Contact link in the footer. A person reads it.
