OUR STANDARDS
Light & Balanced is our editorial label — a mark we give a dinner when it clears two checks: the numbers, and the plate. Here is the whole rule, in plain language, exactly as our kitchen applies it.
Per serving, from our recipe estimates:
Numbers can’t see what’s actually on the plate, so a dinner must also carry at least one of these, at a real serving size:
A dish built on butter, cream, full-fat cheese, or full-fat coconut milk doesn’t qualify, whatever its numbers say — and neither does deep-frying. Plenty of wonderful dinners live on that side of the line; they simply belong to a different kind of evening.
We modeled the structure of this rule — a real food group plus per-serving limits — on the FDA’s updated nutrition criteria (2024) and the American Heart Association’s published recipe standards, adapted for home dinners. BetterDinnerPlans is not affiliated with, certified by, or endorsed by either organization.
Nutrition values are per-serving estimates, and this label is our editorial judgment — not medical or dietary advice. Recipes can gain or lose the label as we revise them; when a recipe changes, its label is re-judged. Questions about how we decided a dish? We’ll tell you honestly.
